Host: ProAging
By: Steve Gurney, Publisher, Guide to Retirement Living Sourcebook

Widely regarded as an expert in senior living options, Steve Gurney realized that he had not truly experienced these settings first-hand, and embarked on a project to live temporarily in a variety of senior housing options. Steve will share the new perspective he has gained from this "life changing" project and will share creative ideas and solutions that we can explore to better serve elders and their families in the future.

Take-Aways:

  • Discover the value of looking at elder-care settings through a "different lens".
  • Understand the impact that "age segregation" plays in leadership, marketing and operations and explore solutions and opportunities.
  • Discover creative ways that you can reinvent your definition of eldercare to create a more appealing offering.

Publisher, Guide to Retirement Living Sourcebook

Steve Gurney founded Guide to Retirement Living SourceBook in 1990. Drawing from the experience of observing his family caring for Steve’s aging grandfather, he created a comprehensive publication to help others in the same situation. Over the next few years Steve expanded the publication to three regional editions, DC metro, State of Maryland, and the Philadelphia region. Steve has worked closely with nearly every regional and national organization on aging to help maximize their exposure and helping find solutions to their challenges.

In 1998, Mr. Gurney sold his company to Greater Washington Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company. He continues to serve as publisher and has dramatically grown the business under the new ownership.

In addition, Mr. Gurney founded ProAging Network meetings, and the ProAging Email Network, important resources for senior-serving professionals.

Mr. Gurney serves or has served on the board of directors for the Grass Roots Organization for the Well-Being of Seniors (GROWS), Alzheimer’s Association, Interages, Business and Aging Task Force, Virginia Intergenerational Task Force, and the Beacon Institute. Steve has served on countless committees and provided guidance to help organizations and businesses better serve the senior population.  Mr. Gurney has received awards and recognition from the Seabury Resources for Aging, Maryland Assisted Living Association, the Senior Marketing Institute and other notable organizations. Mr. Gurney has served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University Odyssey Program and served as an instructor at several universities and corporate training programs. Steve is a regular speaker at local, regional and national events and has been featured in regional and national publications, electronic and broadcast media.
